An Inconvenient Truth Indeed

A few weeks back when I was “supposedly” studying, I saw this documentary titled, ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ I wonder how many of you have seen it, not many I suppose. For those who haven’t, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is all about ex-American Vice president Al Gore’s fervent crusade to divert attention to one very important, and quite literally, burning cause – Global warming.
‘Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of scientists are to be believed then we have a mere 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving, not arms, but extreme droughts, epidemics, killer heatwaves beyond anything we have ever experienced.’
Global Warming is THE biggest problem the world faces today. In the 21st Century, factories, booking industries, chimneys bellowing smoke, deforestation, polluted rivers, even war bombs; all have become a part of our lifestyles. Why? In our quest for superiority over our fellow beings we have forgotten who we actually are! Before vying for the title of ‘Nuclear Superpower’, should we not ponder over its vast ecological and environmental consequences?
Our ancestors, with all due respect to them, had animal instincts. War seemed the most logical and easiest answer to resolving pressing disputes. But times have changed, and so have we, or so we claim. Are we not mature enough to understand the consequences of dumping all industrial waste into the riverbed? Or for that matter, cutting that tree in front of your house just because it blocks your view?
Until we learn that every single one of our actions have consequences, nothing can change…till then, let’s all watch Al Gore deliver his speech, trying, in vain, to arouse our sensitivity towards the environmental cause, and lets hope, one day, very soon, we stop risking the lives of our dear Mother Earth.
